Fidelity (14020) The symbol you entered is invalid

Someone asks:

What’s this mean? And I do have the after hours toggle button on. Trying to buy after hours.

(14020) The symbol you entered is invalid. Please enter a valid symbol or if you do not know the symbol you may use Symbol Lookup on the trade screen to look it up. The Cusip you entered is invalid or may not match the trade action you selected. Please review your order or call Fidelity representative at 1-800-544-6666.

John S:

I’ve seen that pop up for me a few times two, during a after hours trading… I’m not sure if it’s a bug or what. I know for certain that the symbol that I typed in was correct, but I’ve seen this multiple times with the same symbol. I’m wondering if it has something to do with OTC stocks and after market hours… Because I don’t have the issue when I purchase the same symbol during market hours.

Kyndra W:

It has to do with their stop sign. They need to send financials or other docs in to get it removed. If you can purchase a penny stock on Fidelity, basically you know it’s somewhat credible.

I have had this a couple of times with SPY and also trying to sell ETFs I own - so the symbol must be valid (TLT,GDX etc…), nothing that is either low volume or OTC.

Pretty bad bug IMO, I’d expect this from Robinhood, not Fidelity.

The workaround is to install and trade on the platform. Once I had place a trade on the platform, the error disappeared.

Still annoying of you only have your phone or don’t want to install the platform. Not sure if they have a phone app?
