Fidelity (091976) The position you are attempting to sell exceeds the share quantity available

Someone asks:

Does anyone know anything about this error? I have a 106 shares of BIV & 56 shares of BLV in my account and when I try to sell all or even some of the shares, I get this error. The virtual assistant doesn’t have any information on the error. The shares I have were purchased in the Sept-Nov time frame last year and were transferred in when I moved from Vanguard.

Error:(091976) The position you are attempting to sell exceeds the share quantity available in your account. The net position available to be sold is .000 shares which considers both long and short positions in your account.

Nick C:

If you have multiple accounts, make sure the top line of the transactions shows the proper account.

Adam S:

Also make sure that you don’t already have a limit order in on the shares that you forgot about. This happens to me a lot when I had previously set a high limit “just in case”, then forget about it when I go to sell closer to market.
