Fidelity 401(k) Phone Number: The Real One and How to Spot Scams (2027)

Short answer: For a 401(k), 403(b) or other workplace plan run by Fidelity, the official NetBenefits number is 800-835-5095, staffed Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Eastern (Fidelity). Some employers have their own dedicated Fidelity line, so check your plan statement or the contact page inside NetBenefits first. If someone calls you claiming to be Fidelity, hang up and call back on a number you looked up yourself.

This matters because 401(k) phone numbers are a favorite target for scammers. Search results and lookalike sites often show outdated or fake numbers, and a criminal who reaches you first can talk you into reading back a security code or approving a withdrawal. Below are the numbers Fidelity itself publishes, how to find your plan’s own line, and how to tell a real Fidelity call or text from a fake one.

If you are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech impairment, Fidelity accepts relay calls: dial 711 for the FCC Telecommunications Relay Service, or use your Video Relay Service provider.

The NetBenefits line is the one most 401(k) savers want. Fidelity’s general number will route you there too, but calling 800-835-5095 directly skips a step. If you rolled your old 401(k) into a Fidelity IRA, it’s no longer a workplace account: use the general number instead.

Your plan may have its own Fidelity number

Many large employers get a dedicated Fidelity service line or contact page for their plan. When one exists, it’s the best number to use, because the rep already knows your plan’s loan, withdrawal and vesting rules. To find it:

  1. Check a recent statement. Your quarterly 401(k) statement lists the service number for your plan, usually near the top or on the last page.
  2. Log in to NetBenefits. Go to netbenefits.com and open the contact or help link. It shows the number tied to your specific plan.
  3. Look for your employer’s contact page. Some plans have their own page on Fidelity’s site, for example nb.fidelity.com/public/nb/<employer>/contactus. Get the link from your HR or benefits portal rather than guessing the address.
  4. Ask HR. Your benefits team can confirm the right Fidelity line, and it’s also who you call about match formulas, vesting and payroll deferrals.

Know which questions go where. Fidelity handles balances, investments, loans, withdrawals, rollovers out and login problems. Your employer handles eligibility, the match, vesting schedules and anything about your paycheck. See what your plan decides on our 401(k) hub.

Why search results show different Fidelity 401(k) numbers

Search “Fidelity 401k phone number” and you’ll see several numbers, often on sites that look official. When we checked in November 2026, third-party pages listed 800-835-5097 as the main NetBenefits line, while Fidelity’s own phone directory and NetBenefits security page list 800-835-5095. We couldn’t confirm 5097 on any Fidelity page, so we don’t recommend it.

Wrong numbers spread for three reasons:

  • Copied content. Low-quality sites copy each other, so one typo or an old number ends up on dozens of pages.
  • Old plan-specific lines. A number that was right for one employer’s plan years ago gets repeated as if it’s universal.
  • Deliberate fakes. Scammers buy ads or post lookalike pages with their own number, then answer as “Fidelity” and ask you to verify your identity.

The fix is the same every time: take the number from your statement, from NetBenefits, or from fidelity.com’s phone directory. Never from an ad, a forum post or a search snippet. That includes this page: if a number here doesn’t match your statement, trust your statement.

Is that call or text really from Fidelity?

Caller ID proves nothing. Fidelity warns that fraudsters can spoof a number so the call looks like it comes from Fidelity (source). If an unexpected call is about your 401(k), hang up and call back on a number from your statement or the table above.

Texts are easier to check. Fidelity says it sends texts only through your mobile carrier, and never contacts you unsolicited on WhatsApp, Telegram or other messaging apps. These are the short codes it lists as official (source):

Text typeOfficial sender
Workplace plan security (401(k), NetBenefits)29943
NetBenefits service messages42481 or 343898
Multi-factor authentication codes36726, 41443, 22395 or 1-877-372-1150
Digital security alerts55494
Identity verification33436
Customer service76673, 91798 or 95036

A text about your 401(k) from any other number, a regular 10-digit mobile number, or a messaging app should be treated as fake. Even a text from a real short code can be imitated, so don’t tap links in it. Open the NetBenefits app or type the address yourself.

Red flags on a “Fidelity” call

  • They ask you to read back a code. The classic 401(k) scam: the caller triggers a password reset, then asks for the code Fidelity just texted you. Fidelity describes this exact imposter scam. Never share a code you didn’t request.
  • They want remote access to your computer or phone to “fix” a problem.
  • There’s a deadline. “Your account will be frozen today” or “a withdrawal is pending, act now” is pressure, not service.
  • They ask you to move money to a “safe” account, buy gold, or pay by gift card or crypto.
  • They contacted you first about a problem you didn’t know about.

For emails, check the sender and the link destination. Our guides to Fidelity’s @fmr.com email addresses and calls from (603) 402-5050 walk through how to check specific senders.

If you already gave information to a scammer

Act the same day. Fidelity’s own NetBenefits checklist (source) comes down to these steps:

  1. Call Fidelity at 800-835-5095 for a workplace account, or 800-544-6666 for a brokerage or IRA account. Say you think your account is compromised and ask them to check for recent changes to your address, bank details or beneficiaries.
  2. Change your NetBenefits password and the password on your email account, since email is how most resets happen.
  3. Place a fraud alert with one credit bureau, which passes it to the other two: TransUnion 800-680-7289, Equifax 800-525-6285, Experian 888-397-3742.
  4. Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and file a police report if money was taken.
  5. Forward any scam email to phishing@fidelity.com, and say whether you clicked a link or entered your login.

Fidelity’s Customer Protection Guarantee covers losses from unauthorized activity, subject to its conditions, so read it and report problems promptly.

Before you call: what to have ready

A few minutes of prep makes the call shorter:

  • Your NetBenefits username and the personal details on your account. Expect identity questions. A real rep won’t ask for your password or a code you didn’t request.
  • Your employer’s name and plan name, as shown on your statement.
  • The exact question, such as loan payoff amount, hardship eligibility or rollover check status.

Wait times are usually shortest outside market hours. Fidelity notes that 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET on weekdays is its busiest window (source).

You may not need to call at all. NetBenefits and its app handle most routine tasks: changing your contribution, checking a 401(k) loan, starting a withdrawal, and downloading statements. Fidelity’s website also offers live chat, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET and weekends 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET, plus a 24/7 virtual assistant.
